January is Radon Action Month

January is Radon Action Month.  The Iowa Cancer Consortium wants Iowans to test their homes if they haven’t in the past 2 years. We are partnering with Page County Public Health to distribute short-term radon testing kits to those in our area. If you would like one, please call our office. Kits will not be distributed until January 3rd and there is a limited supply. We are asking that the kits be used within two months.

The second-leading cause of lung cancer is exposure to radon, a radioactive gas that can damage the lungs and increase the risk of lung cancer. Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among people who have never smoked. The average indoor radon concentration in Iowa is more than six times the national average. The state also leads the nation in the percentage of homes over the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L, as well as the percentage of homes over 20 pCi/L. An estimated 400 deaths per year in Iowa are caused by radon-induced lung cancer.

All of Iowa is in Radon Zone 1, indicating residents have a very high potential for exposure to elevated levels of radon gas. Read more about radon in Iowa here.
