The community garden located at Trinity Lutheran Church – Mt. Ayr has been expanded for the coming growing season. Mt. Ayr Community School students assisted with site preparation and planting of the garden on April 22, 2015. Shirley Wallace and Sue Larsen guided the students’ work on the 2015 HELP Countywide Service Day. A $400 One Step Community Garden Grant from Hy-Vee Food Stores was awarded for the garden expansion.
To date, the gardens are planted with radishes, spinach, lettuce, bok choy (a Chinese cabbage), onions and carrots. Tomatoes and green peppers will be planted soon. Strawberry plants are being started by one of the gardeners and will later be planted in the garden.
